Antony and Cleopatra

Adapted from Shakespeare by Eleanor Bishop and Chanté Adams.
Performed at Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama, Studio 201.

I think my professors knew I like high-concept Shakespeare because this was my first show assignment of grad school.  For this adaptation of Antony and Cleopatra, our director worked closely with our leading actor to imagine Cleopatra as a Beyoncé-like figure to examine the ways that black female bodies are portrayed in contemporary media.

For this production I immersed myself in the discography of the Queen Bey for my source material.  As many of the sound effects and music as I could were remixed from Beyoncé tracks.  I got good at making sonic-soup, and learned pretty quickly that you can make anything into anything else you can imagine if you break the pieces up small enough.

Highlight Reel from William Shakespeare's 'ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA'.
